[Cooking wasn't such a big deal to Alex - she'd probably been doing it for a long time, not that she could entirely remember. But if she were almost single-handedly taking care of her brother, surely it would stand to reason that was why she didn't seem to have too much of a problem when it came to cooking food that was edible, if not fancy cuisine quality.
It became a big deal though, when she opened the fridge to find little to no food inside. That tended to make things a little more difficult, as her options were severely limited when all she could find were some slightly sad vegetables, some questionable milk and a carton of eggs. The cupboards were a little less sad, but it was clear someone (her, she mentally corrected. Probably her.) would have to go and get some more food in.
Rummaging through the cupboards had rewarded her with a big bag of pasta - cupboard staple, she thought. There was salt, pepper, and a can or two of tomatoes lurking in the back of the cupboard with a perfectly reasonable used by date. Maybe she could make some kind of sauce and chop up the somewhat depressed vegetables that needed using up small enough that no one would taste they were kinda... past it? It was worth a try.]
Wow don't tell me what to do

As usual, he's oddly quiet when he comes in, and when he spots Alex already at work making dinner, he simply walks over to drop the back of groceries unceremoniously on the counter next to her.]
i do what i want

Oh. You got more food?
[The, uh. Familiar grocery logo on the bag should be a big enough clue, really.]
